The Lewy Body Society
Our mission is to fund research to improve the diagnosis and treatment of the disease, and to date we have allocated over £2m in grants to researchers. We also aim to raise awareness of Lewy body dementia among the general public, medical professionals and policy makers, and to also support those affected by the disease with information materials and our partnership with the Admiral Nurse Dementia Helpline.
We are very pleased to have joined the Carers Week campaign. Caring for someone with Lewy body dementia can be extremely challenging. It is often misdiagnosed, so access to the right treatment and support can take some time. We know that carers feel exhausted and isolated, and the pandemic has made things even worse.
Jacqui Cannon, Chief Executive at The Lewy Body Society said:
“The charity was founded by carers and most of our team and trustees have direct experience of caring for someone with Lewy body dementia, so we know first hand the toll it can take on a carer’s health, wellbeing and ability to work.
“By joining together with other national charities, we can speak with a louder voice in calling for more support for carers, locally and nationally.
“Too often, when someone is diagnosed with Lewy body dementia, they and their family is given no information about the disease and the differences with other types of dementia. We aim to fill that gap with our guide book and leaflets, and we also fund the Admiral Nurse Dementia Helpline which offers fantastic support and advice.
“We look forward to encouraging our supporters to take part in Carers Week activities and having their huge contribution recognised."
